Well I’m sure you have all heard by now that this little unknown video game title Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 released today November 10, 2009. I was in line at EB Games to get my title first thing this morning and it was well worth the 7am wake up and bus ride. And it was well worth it.

When I first heard word of an FPS with RPG elements and 80 million guns my ears perked up like a cute little doggy. Although I am neither cute nor a dog, but that is beside the point, this game had my interest from day one. Now Borderlands has gotten a little lost amidst the hype of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the slew of top notch titles of November but nothing has held this puppy back. 2K Games is reporting shortages all over North America, it seems not even the games publishers knew how big this thing could be. All around the web gaming sites are giving Borderlands strong reviews that are for the most part 8.5 and up. But is that high enough? I can answer that!

Gratuitous Space Battles is the new game from UK developer ‘Positech Games’. It’s a strategy / management / simulation game that does away with all the base building and delays and gets straight to the meat and potatoes of science-fiction games : The big space battles fought by huge spaceships with tons of laser beams and things going ‘zap!’, ‘ka-boom!’ and ‘ka-pow!’. In GSB you put your ships together from modular components, arrange them into fleets, give your ships orders of engagement and then hope they emerge victorious from battle (or at least blow to bits in aesthetically pleasing ways).

Trading old video games in for new ones is not a new process for me but it is still as much of a nail biting experience as it was the first time I did it. I remember the first time I tried to trade in games. It was at a mom and pop kind of gaming store. At the time GameStop wasn’t a house hold… well gamer house hold name, I traded in some Dreamcast games hoping to come out with a wad of cash. But I was sorely disappointed; they hardly gave me anything for these games, at least not what I thought they were worth. I can’t recall the names of the games I traded in but to me they were of much greater value then whatever shitty deal they wanted to give me and I, at the time being 10 or so, cried about it. The experience of trading games hasn’t gotten any better since.

This year’s holiday lineup in the video game world is one I’m sure we will all look back on as the best in quite some time. Not just because of the number of blockbuster titles but the quality of them. Already we’ve seen likely one of the best PS3 games ever in Uncharted 2 and other fantastic titles like Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time and Forza 3. Still to come are two titles-NEW Super Mario Bros. Wii and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2-that’s predecessors have a history of outstanding review scores and sales. Also, two sequels-Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassins Creed 2-that are looking like they will take their franchises to the next level. But wait there’s more: Read the rest of this entry »

The notion of finding a fun and addicting game on a console for under 10 bucks is something people aren’t used to. But ever since Indie Games appeared on Xbox Live a year ago you can occasionally come across an enjoyable game for just a few bucks. But I know a game that is just one dollar that will keep you playing for hours. Read the rest of this entry »

(Update: A much needed patch has been announced for NBA 2K10)
Sports games I find are difficult to review. The reason? They are basically the same thing every year with minor tweaks. A portion of rating a sports game is based on past titles from the same franchise and comparing it to games from other companies of the same sport. The two major sports game creators, EA Sports and 2K Sports, each have the sports that they dominate. EA Sports owns the football market, not because it’s better, but because its the only football game. And with 2K Sports owning baseball rights that basically leaves two sports that the companies compete in: hockey and basketball. I’m here to talk about the latter.
